Who Gets The Lion's Share?

John BoyUk, 30 October

"Aren't you ashamed to reserve for yourself only the remnants of your life and to dedicate to wisdom only that time can't be directed to business?"
—SENECA, ON THE BREVITY OF LIFE, 3.5B

I really like this meditation today and I think that it really drives home the message, that we most definitely have to put the work in, to reap the rewards in all walks of life and that includes trading of course.

The last sentence of today's meditation really sums it up and I quote; "The average person somehow manages to squeeze in twenty-eight hours of television per week--but ask them if they had time to study philosophy and they will probably tell you they're too busy."

This is so true and it immediately makes me think of those desperate people who want to be spoon-fed exactly what to do and when to do it, rather than studying and developing, to become self-sufficient and profitable traders in their own right.

If you don't put the hours and hours of hard work in, you simply will not learn and gain experience and you will always be reliant on others; which usually means paying for services/tipsters etc. etc. When all's said and done, you just blame the service/tipster when things go wrong and you take zero responsibility for your actions. You are also throwing your money away, month, after month, after month!

Wouldn't it be satisfying to practice through trial and error and work towards your goal of developing/finding a quality strategy that you can be proud of using?

Once you start doing this, you will become addicted to learning and repetitively practising, day in day out and you will become accountable for your trades. Then you can truly say, I worked hard for this and I stuck to the rules/criteria for my strategy 100% of the time and I also have a great feeling of self-satisfaction, from what I have achieved. Only then will you reap the rewards and gain that satisfaction of a job well done.

There is absolutely no reason why you can't do this, if you are prepared to put in the hard work. Are you prepared to do that? The ball is in your court; it's all down to you!
